Day 2 - Racing Towards Team Glory

The second day of Ontario Summer Games was packed with solid racing and swimmers putting out some gutsy performances and putting everything on the line in order to score precious points for their teams.  The end of the session saw Western Region leading slightly over Eastern, setting up for an exciting team race for the title of "Ontario Summer Games Champions' on Friday afternoon.

Performances of note:

- Stephanie Papadedes, Western, in the 16 year old girls 200 free, having a stellar last 50 to move up for the win

- Closest race of the night went to Collin Reynolds, Eastern and Alexander Chin, Central, battling for the silver and bronze positions in the 14 and under boys 200 free, with Reynolds outtouching Chin by 2/100ths

- Huronia's Anne Filion in the 14 and under girls 200 back who took it out hard and held on for the silver medal

- Elisabeth Hurlen, Northwest, had an amazing last 75 in the 15 year old 200 back, sneaking in for the bronze medal

- Brandon Bronson, Central, in the 15 year old boys 200 back had the best spliting, coming from behind to take the gold

Day 1 - Fast Swimming to Kick off Ontario Summer Games

The first day of the Ontario Summer Games in Sudbury, pitting region against region, was as hot as the weather, with some fast swimming and tight racing to kick off the event.

Each region is fighting hard for the title of Ontario Summer Games champion and the 50 free, 200 fly, 100 breast, 200 IM and 4x100 free relays were chalked full of excitement.  The 100 breaststroke was a particularly exciting event when Erin Stamp, Western Region and Takara Martin, Northwestern Region in the 15 year old girls event went stroke for stroke with Stamp just out touching Martin for the gold by tenths.  Minutes later, another close race in the 16 year old boys race with Jordan Lovis, Northwest, coming from behind with a fantastic finish to just get past Huronia's Jonathan Bucarelli in the final meters.

1.  Central - 796
2.  Eastern - 755
3.  Huronia - 574
4.  Northeast - 571
5.  Western - 485

Five Ontario regional teams competed at the 2008 Ontario Summer Games in Ottawa August 12-16. Central, Eastern, Huronia, Northeast and Western regions each had 24 swimmers competing for the title of team champions and the athletes did not disappoint.

Central and Eastern quickly established they would be battling closely for the title with mere points separating them after each session. Eastern unfortunately had some relay disqualifications costing them important points as Central pulled away from them in the final two events to clinch the win and bring home the championship banner and glory. An even closer competition emerged with Northeast battling Huronia for third spot, with Huronia squeaking past them at the end by three points.

Many swimmers rose to the occasion of swimming morning finals similar to the Olympic format in Beijing and racing late into the season.

Congratulations to all athletes!
