Day 1

Day 1 of the Ontario Junior International at the Toronto Pan Am Sports Centre saw that some of the fastest 18 and under swimmers in the world were ready to race after watching the FINA SC World Championships take the centre stage last week in Windsor.

The race of the night was the 400 IM which saw Mary-Sophie Harvey from Neptune Natation battle Sarah Darcel from Island Swimming.  Harvey dominated the second half of the race, and touched the wall in 4:26.42, smashing the old Canadian record of 4:29.22.  This time would have been the silver medal swim at Worlds, which shows the true strength of this performance on the world level.

Rebecca Smith, who is now training at the High Performance Centre Ontario under coach Ben Titley and representing Scarborough Swim Club, threw down an impressive 1:52.99 in the 200 free and shortly after went 57.70 in the 100 fly to take gold in both events in new Ontario record times.

There are 12 swimmers from Britain and 5 from Scotland taking part in the meet, and they came prepared to race, with British Swimming athletes taking home five wins on Day 1 - Elliot Clogg in the 200 free and 50 back (1:46.77 and 25.23), Imogen Clark in the 100 breast (1:05.12), David Murphy in the 100 breast (58.98), and Joe Litchfield in the 400 IM (4:11.75).
